Digital signature certificate:  

The digital signature certificate is a safe digital key issued by certifying authorities to authenticate the identity of the certificate holder.

Digital signature certificate encompasses the holder’s information such as his/her name, country, pin code, email address, date when the certificate is issued, and name of certifying authority. Digital signature certificates are like physical certificate, the difference is that DSC is in digital or electronic form and physical certificate is in paper form. It is just like a driving license and passport and ands as proof of identity of the license holder and passport holder, similarly, DSC is used to electronically prove an identity.

A Digital Signature certificate form replaces the traditional form of a handwritten signature and it is necessary for Companies and limited liability partnerships (LLPs) to sign and file returns in the GST common portal whereas DSC for GST is not made mandatory for other taxpayers. Only class 3 Digital signature certificate is required that has a validity of  2 years as recently the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) has discontinued new issue of Class 2 DSC w.e.f 1st January, 2021. In India, GST Return filing and GST registration require an approved class 3 digital signature certificate. Documents and application processes associated with the Government such as GST Registration and other essential documents uploaded to the GST common Portal necessarily involve the digital signature certificate. Hence, it is essential to get a DSC for GST filling and Return.
